I really need a cell phone but all my mom says is “no, no, and no!” what is the best cell phone service provider? (not too expensive, but not to cheap.)

What I want is basic service with an unlisted number. Peoplepc is my internet service provider (Yes, there are people out there that still have dial-up.) and 97% of my land line usage is just that. I send a couple of faxes a month, and it is nice to be able to call my cell phone when it is lost. That’s it. Who is the cheapest? I live in the San Francisco bay area. (Northern California)

Marie Q asked:

I currently have a $29.99 (+ taxes, etc.) Sprint/Embarq plan that includes after 7pm weeknights and weekends free. I have had so many problems with Sprint/Embarq service and with all kinds of additional charges they refuse to remove that I am looking for a different plan when my contract expires in February 2008. I would be interested in plans in the same cost range since I’m not a big cell phone user.

Mira asked:

I’m looking to buy a new cell phone and need to find out what my options are. I’m not crazy about the limited selection of cell phones that my service provider offers and would like to buy one elsewhere. Can you buy a phone from another place (e.g. Walmart, ebay, etc.), take it to your cell service provider, and have your current plan transferred onto it, or can you only do this with phones that are bought from your service provider? Many stores sell contract phones that are already linked with a certain service provider that offers a plan with purchase. Is it true that there are codes that are already programmed in for just one provider? Can this be changed? And what about pre-paid phones - can you buy one and have a regular contract service transferred onto it? Please help! Thanks

I am with Cingular, but I am out of service in my house. My boyfriend’s mother said there was some antenna that you could get that goes on the top of your house, and it has a cord that comes down through the wall or something and it hooks to your cell phone. Does anyone know what antenna & cord they are talking about, and how much one runs/where I could get one??

I only have a cell phone but would like to have Internet service without using my cable company. I notice that some companies offer bundle packages, but it seems that you must have a land line. My current cell phone contract is about to expire, so I am currently looking at my different options.
